June 30, 1999

Dear friends, colleagues, and interested "flavinologists",

In the meantime, we have received over 250 registrations, and we are busy organizing lecture rooms and space for poster display, since this is just about the number of participants we can accommodate without incurring in limitations. Also around 200 poster abstracts have been sent to us, in addition to the approximately 30 abstracts of the oral presentations. Unfortunately, some abstracts are still overdue, but we are confident we will receive all of them. Some 20 young participants (selected from the submitted abstracts) have been invited for short oral presentations in the evenings. Most replies were positive.
We hope all those who have registered have also received a confirmation for the (hotel) accommodation. If there are any problems with the latter you should contact urgently the Tourist Office of Konstanz, and – if everything else fails – please write to us.
We have also done a preliminary scrutiny of the applications for support, indeed we have received many of them. However, a final decision will have to await the outcome of all applications for support, and this might still take some time. We will contact the applicants as soon as possible.

The Guide for the Preparation of Manuscripts Ready for Reproduction is now available. Please follow the instructions very carefully. Manuscripts that do not fullfill the requirements won't be published.
Note: Absolute deadline for submitting manuscripts is definitely
Friday, September 3rd, 1999.
We are planning to have the book in a printed form within two months after the meeting, and therefore no exceptions to this deadline will be made!

All forms including such for the submission of abstracts are now on-line. The preliminary registration form is removed from the site. A step-by-step guideline for the registration procedure is added to the front page.

Dear friends, colleagues, and interested "flavinologists",

As you probably will have heard or seen, the Thirteenth International Congress on "Flavins and Flavoproteins" will be held at the Universität Konstanz (Germany) from August 29. to September 4, 1999. We, Sandro Ghisla, Peter Kroneck, Peter Macheroux, and Horst Sund, together with our groups, will organize it here in Konstanz. This meeting will be the next in a long series of successful ones. We will do our best to continue this tradition, and we hope that you will be able to attend. The meeting will be devoted to all roles of flavins and related molecules in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, and biophysics. For specific topics and for the preliminary program have a look at our Web page.

On this page you will find the the latest news and informations.
We have now drafted the tentative scientific program. Next week it will be put in the mail for those of you who have sent their preliminary registrations, or who have requested so. But you will find the program also on this page. Please follow the links!
Here you will find some additional information which might help you in your planning:

The University is located at the scenic Lake of Konstanz close to the Swiss border. Konstanz is easily reached by train or car, or via the Zürich airport (70 km), which has a good train service into Konstanz (70 min). Again, contact the Web. There is also an excellent bus service connecting the city with the University.

The scientific program will be arranged around a dozen "state of the art" lectures (30-45 minutes). Speakers who have already confirmed their participation are S. Chapman (Edinburgh), L. Dutton, (Philadelphia) W. Briggs (Stanford), A. Cashmore (Philadelphia), A. Karplus (Cornvallis), J. Klinman (Berkeley), R. Perham (Cambridge), R. Matthews (Ann Arbor), V. Massey (Ann Arbor). In addition there will be about twenty invited speakers for shorter lectures (20-30 minutes). On the occasion of the banquet H. Beinert (Madison) will present a lecture on the history of flavin and flavoprotein research
The oral contributions will be held mainly in the morning sessions.
The afternoon sessions will be devoted to posters and discussions among the participants. All posters will be up for the full length of the meeting. Each participant is entitled to present one poster, and we encourage everybody to do so.
On four evenings we will have special lectures given by distinguished members of the "flavin community". In addition, we will have short talks (10-20 min), which will be selected on the basis of the submitted abstracts, due by May 30, 1999.
On Wednesday morning, there will be the opportunity for the participants to meet informally and discuss specific topics. We will intervene and provide the necessary infrastructure if requested. The afternoon will be free. For those who are interested in sports activities, we try to organize a fun soccer game. In the evening we will have the banquet followed by the lecture of H. Beinert, Madison.

There will be a Proceedings book (approx. 1000 pages), which we are planning to have published by November 1999 at the latest. The book will contain all the papers derived from oral presentations and posters.

The registration fee will be DM 400 (US$ 250). This includes a copy of all abstracts, all refreshments during the meeting, lunch and dinner (served at the University cafeteria) at four days, banquet and, most importantly, the Proceedings book (US$ 100, excluding shipping charges).
In our opinion it is very important to publish the book as quick as possible after the meeting, and for the very short period intervening we depend on professional help. Information on how to pay the registration fee is to be found on the enclosed form, and on our Web page.

It is also planned to provide support for young participants. Thus, younger scientists should send us an application together with the registration. The application form is to be found on our Web-page. This application also should be accompanied by a letter of recommendation by a supervisor or head of department.
Participants from specific countries should contact the indicated persons for support: (USA: Al Claiborne; Japan: Takeshi Nishino; Italy: Mirella Pilone; Lettland and Eastern Countries: Narimantas Cenas; Germany: (information will be provided later).
Participants requesting a letter of invitation from the organizing committee should write us.

Important: we request everybody to register and to pay the fees in full before the dead-line! We will provide a refund to those entitled at the time of the congress.
As Konstanz is located in a major tourist area, and the congress will be held during the main tourist season, hotels will be around DM 70-150/person/night. We have already reserved a sub-stantial amount of rooms for the time of the congress. A limited number of cheaper accommodations also will be available. Reservations will be handled exclusively by the Konstanz Tourist Information Office.

Please send us as early as possible the registration form you will receive in the mail, or download it and use it!
